The digital era which we are living through implies an evolution, if not a revolution, of professional and teaching practices in the field of translation, as in that of writing. In this context, the present issue of the journal focuses on collaborative practices (including collaboration between people and machines), which occupies a more and more central place in the production of texts and translations, and aims to illustrate and analyse different experiments of collaboration in academic and professional settings. The articles presented thus show how collaboration has become key to following, understanding and contributing to model the current evolution of translation, integrating both the human and technological dimensions, in order to redefine it as a collective, shared and plural activity, and to value more the human contribution to the field. The themes that are dealt with include: academic projects of distant and onsite collaboration between trainee translators in the fields of literary, journalistic and technical translation, terminology or technical writing ; participative learning practices of translation in academic settings; practices of collaboration between people and machines on translation in the classroom; role of collaboration in the translation practices of the Directorate-General of Translation (DGT) of the European Commission. The issue creates the "Dissemination" section, which enables us to republish invaluable documents that are no longer available. In the present case, readers will find there a Handbook for the organisation of intensive translation sessions, which was one of the results of a collaboration between seven European universities between 2014 and 2016.

It is widely accepted that in translation, an optimal rendering of the meaning of the source text extensively relies on the mobilisation of the translator’s cognitive baggage, which is generally limited to abstract, cerebral conceptual knowledge, spontaneously assimilated to encyclopaedic knowledge. However, certain types of texts, whatever the field, call upon the sensory-motor or experiential memory of both the translator and the reader. In literary translation, some texts make the reader see, hear or feel, in descriptions, dialogues or action scenes, for example. In pragmatic translation, certain operative texts (such as instructions for use, user manuals or assembly instructions) are also likely to appeal to the reader’s kinaesthetic memory and thus to that of the translator. The present study proposes to explore the theoretical, practical and didactic foundations and issues of an "experiential" approach to translation.

This paper written as an ABC deals with PIRAT (Pédagogie Innovante et Recherche Appliquée en Traduction – Innovative Pedagogy and Applied Research in Translation), a project which officially started in January 2025 at Marie & Louis Pasteur University in Besançon. Each entry in the alphabet presents the issues at stake and the birth of the project, the participants in the PIRAT project, its pedagogical framework and objectives, the ever-changing digital environment to which it seeks to adapt, and its theoretical foundations in relation to translation studies. It also tackles the challenges of implementing a project as a multilingual team, including the interest of doing so, the team’s contributions, and the difficulties of involving teaching staff with different statuses, not all of whom are specialised in translation studies.

Language professions and translation in particular are on the front line in defining a reasoned and responsible approach to artificial intelligence technologies. As part of this movement, the present contribution explores the challenges of AI in the training of the language experts of tomorrow. It begins by taking stock of the current state of these tools in professional translation. From there, it considers the emerging roles that graduates of our training courses will be called upon to play, and the skills they will need to incorporate into their professional toolbox. The importance of consolidating human-specific skills as the cornerstone of professional translation service provision is emphasized. Finally, the authors look at the practical ways in which these technologies can be integrated into initial and continuing training for the translation professions, and share their experience of an experiential and collaborative approach to teaching these tools. Tämän nykytilan kuvauksen pohjalta pohdimme, millaisia uusia rooleja käännösalan koulutusohjelmista valmistuvilta odotetaan ja millaisia keskeisiä osaamisalueita heidän on sisällytettävä ammatilliseen työkalupakkiinsa.
